White Wednesday

For this "White Wednesday" I decided to let you peek in my bathroom. I have lots of chippy, white furniture & architectural pieces throughtout my home, but my bathroom is pretty much the only room in my house that is all white. Above is a crusty, old white chandelier that hangs above my bathtub. The shelf is actually made from a piece of the old Laguna Beach boardwalk that is used throughout Country Roads, my store. I love to have part of my store, which is a part of my life, in my home. And on that shelf are some of my very favorite old white pitchers that I love. This is my old clawfoot bathtub that sits below the shelf in the picture above. Somehow, my son mananged to get this into my bathroom by himself. And he wonders why his back hurts? I got this little piece a few years ago, it too is above my bathtub. It is an old antique paper towel holder and mirror that came from a "mens restroom". Bet it has some stories to tell!! I have lots of architectural elements in my home, but this one is by far, one of my favorites. It is a vintage piece from an old windmill! The rusty iron, and the patina of the white, chippy paint is awesome. It has alot of meaning to me as I bought it from my good friend, Chris Nickoloff who sadly passed away a few years ago. She had such a great eye for the "best of the best"! When you're sick with that "junkin' antique collecting bug" you have your collections everywhere in your home. This vintage medical cabinet in my bathroom hold old medical items along with a collection of vintage razors. This old architectural shelf sits above my pedestal bathroom sink. On it is a collection of old powder tins, along with some old bottles of lotion. Above the shelf sits my old medicine cabinet with a vintage "physician" sign on top. This is kind of a weird picture but above the old ceiling tin mirror is the ceiling in my bathroom. We are a do-it-yourself family, so things aren't always perfect but they work. My son had knocked out a little wall to make the bathroom bigger, so it messed up the ceiling. It took some time, but I started buying old white vintage ceiling tins here and there. I finally had enough for Bryce (my son) to cover the whole bathroom ceiling with them. I love the way it turned out.And lastly, above the toilet is another shelf made from the old boardwalk that holds more of my shaving/razor collection. I love old advertising and one day came across some old vintage razor blade displays from an old store, which are also hanging on the wall. I guess when you've got the "bug" of collecting, you decorate every room, even the bathroom! Please stop by and visit Kathleen over at Faded Charm. She has an awesome blog with many others posting for White Wednesday!!

Bloomin' Tuesday

Here's a few photos of what's bloomin' in my garden this week. This white foxglove just bloomed this past week. There is something I love about white flowers! This foxglove continues to bloom, must know that makes me happy. My little ladybug poppy continues to just bloom & bloom! These flowers, I think might be black-eyed susan's, not sure. But they are really doing well and I love the color on them. My pineapple plant just bloomed again last week. I love how the flower look just like little pineapples. My Mary Lou Heard rose has done well all summer. This rose was named after a really awesome woman here in So.Calif that owned a nursery called Heards Gardens. She died way too soon, but what an honor to have a rose named after her! I love these little light pink flowers. They are blooming everywhere, and I've totally forgotten the name of them but I absolutely love the color and shape of the flower! Be sure to stop by and visit Ms.Greenthumb Jean She has a wonderful garden a bunch more links to view several others. Happy Gardening!

Riley's Backyard

That's me & my dad in our backyard LONG before it was Riley's backyard! Katie & Vinnie bought my parents house after they died. My mom & dad bought the little house when it was new, and lived in that house their entire lives. Katie & Vinnie added on to the house, but it's still the same house I grew up in, the same backyard I played in as a kid.I've been trying these past years to go through all my parents photos and find some order to them. This was me, in the backyard with my cousin Larry's dog. How I remember that is beyond me.The best part about all the photos I have, the majority of them my dad wrote some kind of comment on them. Those carefree days as a little kid just entertaining yourself in the backyard, no worries, no stress! I miss those days. There were hours I spent in that backyard, lots of good happy times, even has I got older.Remember when the laundry had to actually be hung up on the clothes line? I wonder if the clothes got a lot of bird poop on them and then you had to start all over again? Sorry, just the way I think. I remember as I got older having to take down the dry laundry down. I hated doing it so I just pulled each piece as hard as I could till it came down off the clothesline. Of course, I broke many clothes pins that way, and of course I got in trouble time and time again. I guess I was just that kind of kid, ornery! Sometimes when I sit out back with Riley at her house now, there are so many memories still there for me. I'm happy my granddaughter is growing up in the house I did, just something kind of special for me!!

A Weeks Worth of Thoughts

I was just telling my friend, Malisa, that I love books, and really like to read but my brain has difficulty turning off. I'm always thinking, wondering of the "whys" in life as we travel this journey. Why does something so simple as a bunch sunflowers from Trader Joes that I bought this morning make me feel good each time I pass them in my house? I think back on this past week and wonder what I've learned. This little girl reminds me daily of what is important in life, she warms my heart in more ways than I could ever put into words. And just that "smile" makes my days brighter. The other day, I was rushing around the house, as usual, and started to unload the dishwasher. Riley walked up to me and looked into my eyes and said, "Gramma, can I help"? Four simple words that have now become a constant reminder to me to slow down because life passes by so quickly and I don't want to miss the little stuff. And this little girl reminds me daily how fast she is changing, growing and for me to remember I don't want to miss a those little changes. Morgan has just now started smiling, and I'm glad I can enjoy that tiny little smile with the little baby "talking" she now does. And before I know it, she too will be saying, "Gramma, can I help"? Then there are days I find my mind wandering, thinking about all the smaller stuff in life. As I water my garden, I look at my pumpkin vine and wonder will I get pumpkins this year, and if I do, there has to be two so I can carve "Riley" into one, and "Morgan" in the other one. If you gently crave something on pumpkins when they are small, they will grow with the carvings becoming larger. We did that last year on a pumpkin with "Riley" carved into it, and I wondered back then, when Justine found out she was pregnant, what Morgan would look like and how fun it would be to carve her name on a pumpkin. And in a blink of an eye, here I am thinking the same thoughts today with Morgan as a small baby and Riley now almost three years old! I often think about bees, yep you read that right! They are pretty smart bugs. A few months ago, these bees in the picture had started to form a beehive in my rosebush. I contacted these girls who rescue bees. She told me that the bees would probably move in a couple of days to a place where they had a hive a year ago once the queen bee went back to it. And you know what, they did exactly that! I was amazed. But it also made me think, if bees are so smart, why am I always trying to rescue them out of my pool? Wouldn't you think that the word would be out in the bee community, like "don't dip in a swimming pool for a drink", especially since bees appear to be so smart? And lastly what's really been in my thoughts this week is why people die before their time. Last Saturday, a customer, actually my friend Teresa, had come into the store with tears in her eyes to tell me something very sad. You see, there is a small florist and gift shop in Old Towne Orange called Juleps. It's owned by this awesome couple, Kyle & Linda Hodo. A little over a week ago, Kyle was on his motorcycle and had a seizure and died instantly in the accident. They are young, I'm guessing in their late 30's, don't know for sure. Here in Old Towne, we are all small, family owned businesses with the exception of a bank, Starbucks and a Radio Shack. Because we all work our businesses we don't get out to visit much with each other unless we have a meeting of some sort that we are holding in Old Towne. All I can say is Linda and Kyle are/were the most supportive & postive people in Old Towne. I just remember their willingness to always participate, their good energy and support of everything. And I will never, ever forget Kyle's smile. This is the magic of little areas like ours, Old Towne Orange. It is all about family! It reminds me today that this is how our country was founded, by "family businesses", not the big shopping malls. So, as I conclude my "Weeks Worth of Thoughts", I'll probably go sit out by the pool with my ipod, a cold Corona and my dog Sally. And yes, I will be out there with my pool net rescuing bees. Please know Kyle, you and your awesome smile will be missed!

Gramma's Girls!

The other day I had both Riley & Morgan at the same time. Not sure how I did it, but I miraculously got them both asleep at the same time. Just thought I'd share some pix's of MY baby girls!

I've had many roles in my life, but I have to say, being a "Gramma" to my two little babies is, by far, the best thing that has ever happened to me. Thank you Riley & Morgan!

Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad!

My mom & dad were married on July 17th, 1950, and today would have been their 59th wedding anniversary. You know, it's taken me quite awhile to admit this but I think they were "truly" in love. The reason it has taken me awhile is because as they both began to age, it was horrific with the dementia/Alzheimer issues, I was caught up in it daily. It made me feel like I was going down that path of insanity right beside them!! But with the passage of time, I now know they loved each other until the day the they died.

Posted by Picasa
That's my mom and dad in the bottom of the picture on their wedding day. In the middle is my great Aunt & Uncle, Glen & Fay Boydstun. Tom & May Bryant are next to my great Aunt & Uncle, which are sadly the only two still alive today. It was such a different generation back then, so different from today. Life just seemed simpler, happier and not as complicated. My sister and I didn't have a lot growing up, but we were very well taken care of and never did without. Somewhere I have another picture much like the one that was taken down in TJ, Mexico. The one I can't find was a similar pose, same place, just different people with a sign that said "Just Married". As I've said many times in the past, I was quite proud of myself for being married 22 years, thought that was quite the accomplishment consdering I was married to Mr.Wonderful! But what my folks had was SO much more, so entirely different, a lifetime together. I'll never forget the heartbreak of having to put them into assisted living towards the end of their lives. My mom's health was much worse than my dad's and he wasn't able to take care of her at home. Yep, I had healthcare come in, nurses and more. But my dad would either insult them or kick them out of the house, that was Mr.Moore!! For years, my dad's only goal in life was to take care of my mom. Looking back, when I was in the middle of all the illness, and dementia/Alzheimer stuff, I felt like I couldn't breathe, almost suffocating, it wasn't easy. Nor could I make sense of what was going on with the two of them. But looking back now, today, I have such a greater respect for both of them, I undertand the "whys" more clearly now. I know now my mom clung to life just long enough to know that my little Riley was born healthy & happy, and then she "let go", four days after Riley's birth. My dad's physical and mental health declined pretty fast after that. After all, he had not only lost the love of his life, but his purpose in life as well. My dad passed away a few months later on Valentine's day in 2007. I understand now that was his Valentine gift to my mom to truly be with her forever! And I have to give the guy props, it was quite the gift. Today I look at those pictures above and can smile without wanting to strangle my dad! Those pictures now warm my heart. And mostly, I know they are still together after all these years, "Happy Anniversary" to you both!

What's New at Country Roads?

So, what's new at Country Roads besides my little grandkids above? A lot is new! We've got a brand new dealer in the front window of the last building, Tim & Lisa. There are some pix's of their space at the beginning of the slideshow. We also have our dealers bringing in great stuff daily. And they don't just "bring it in", they display it. Our in Johnnye Merle's Garden and Nursery we've got a big Annie's Annual order coming in today and tomorrow we have another plant delivery with a cool selection of perennials and shade plants. I hope you enjoy the slideshow below and if something catches you eye that you can't live without, come on down and visit us. Or, just to make sure it is still there, give us a call and charge it over the phone. Thanks for the continued support from each and everyone of you, it is truly appreciated!

Bloomin' Tuesday

I've been waiting & waiting for my foxgloves to bloom. Finally, after all this time they have decided to bloom for me. For some reason, foxgloves are one of my favorites! Also, all the sunflowers are doing really well, and still blooming.I have a variety of sunflowers this year, and wish I would have kept the plant stakes to identify them. Unfortunately, the only one I seem to remember is the last picture which I believe is a "teddy bear" sunflower. Hope all of your are enjoying your gardens as much as I'm enjoying mine this summer!!
